Base64 Encode / Decode

Convert text to Base64 and back, with UTF-8 support.

About this tool

Base64 encodes binary or text data into an ASCII string, commonly used in data URLs, email attachments and API tokens. This converter fully supports UTF-8, so emoji and non-English text encode and decode correctly. All processing happens locally in your browser.

Common use cases

How it works

Base64 takes every 3 bytes of binary data (24 bits) and splits them into four 6-bit groups. Each 6-bit value maps to one of 64 characters: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, and /. The = character is used for padding when the input length is not a multiple of 3 bytes. This ensures the encoded output contains only printable ASCII characters.

FAQ

Does this support UTF-8 and emoji?

Yes. It encodes via UTF-8 first, so multibyte characters and emoji round-trip correctly.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption — it's easily reversible and provides no security. Never use it to protect secrets.

Can I decode a data URL?

Paste just the Base64 portion (after the comma) into Decode. The prefix like data:image/png;base64, is not part of the encoded data.

Why is my Base64 output padded with =?

Padding (=) is added when the input byte count is not divisible by 3. One = means 1 extra byte, two == means 2 extra bytes. It is required for proper decoding.

What is Base64url?

Base64url replaces + with - and / with _ to make the output safe for URLs and filenames. It is used in JWT, OAuth tokens, and web APIs.
